Basic Wine Terminology From An Online Wine Merchants
The world of wine tasting can seem like a daunting one filled with new terminology only meant for the cultured. Unfortunately, this can put off many new wine tasters, especially from attending large, formal wine tastings. So, as an online Wine Merchant looking to make wine accessible for all, however much knowledge they have about wine, I have put together this basic glossary of basic terms.
‘This wine has a good length’
This isn’t referring to the size of the glass or bottle(!) but to that taste that is left in the top of your mouth. The longer the length, the better it is.
‘Varietal’
Chardonnay and Merlots are both varietal Wines because the name of the wine is the same as the grape used to make it. Wines with two grape varieties in the titles e.g. Chardonnay-Viognier are blends and not varietals.
‘Malolactic Fermentation’
This is the process of turning sharper, more tart wines into wines with a rounder, fuller flavour. This is most commonly used for grapes from a cooler climate because they contact more malic acid.
‘Secondary Fermentation’
This is the process of transforming a wine into a Champagne or Sparkling Wine. Sugar and yeast are added to the wine which causes the secondary fermentation and adds the bubbles.
‘This wine has legs’
‘Legs’ are the streaks that appear in the wine glass when it is swirled around. For a long time it was commonly believed that this was a sing of a Good Wine however this is now widely disputed.
‘Palate’
Your palate is your individual taste and preferences for different qualities in wines and foods. Everyone’s palate is different and is the reason why some people prefer a rich, full bodied red and others would rather a chilled, dry white.
These basic wine tasting terms should help you understand a little more about wine tasting and the language used to describe them.
